About Dual Diagnosis Ireland
A volunteer-led, not-for-profit charity with one simple aim: that people with both a mental health problem and an addiction get the right kind of treatment at the first time of asking.
Set up in 2008 to fill a gap nobody else was filling
In February 2008 we set up a not-for-profit organisation to raise awareness of the lack of services for the many people living with both a mental health problem, such as depression, and an addiction.
We work alongside other campaigners in the mental health sector. We are founding members of Mental Health Reform and members of the Alcohol Health Alliance. There is no other organisation in Ireland focused purely on improving services for people with a dual diagnosis.
We believe we’re having a real impact: the term “dual diagnosis” is now far better known, and the HSE has been developing a clinical programme for it. Our aim is simple — and once it’s achieved, Dual Diagnosis Ireland will dissolve.
Since 2008 we have:
- Built and run this awareness website
- Run a national advertising campaign
- Set up a mailing list for people working or interested in this area
- Completed numerous media briefings across press, radio and TV
- Helped people find the right service for their needs
- Supported researchers working in dual diagnosis
- Run and spoken at events for professionals in the field
- Participated in political campaigns and made submissions to Government
